Health & Hygiene

Conditioned to always put others before themselves, women often neglect their own health. After all, how many of us have seen our mothers sit through the night when one of us has a fever but rarely ever complain when their health is deteriorating? However, it isn’t easy to change the perception that a woman’s health is secondary to her families, so the starting point of our Health & Hygiene module is nutrition and hygiene for the family. Women are counselled and taught healthy food recipes, working on low-cholesterol meals and avoiding junk-food for children. The diet sessions often steamroll into cooking competitions where the whole neighbourhood partakes some healthy snacks.

We have doctors and medical experts come in to talk to women about gynaecological and menstrual health. Special focus is giving to mental well-being with counsellors coming in to talk about mental health, depression and stress-management. Facilitators are also brought in to run sessions on yoga, meditation and exercise.

With the help of trained personnel, we educate our women to handle medical emergencies calmly. Sessions cover how to communicate and interact with doctors and how to understand medical prescriptions and pathology reports. We also train participants on the importance of recognizing the early signs of a medical problem and taking timely actions.
